Why Paparazzi Proposals

Why a team, and not one photographer you found online.

At Paparazzi Proposals we understand that you have a big life decision ahead, and it needs all kinds of support: from emotional guidance to help with logistics and planning. Over a decade of working and learning, we have developed protocols to make sure your proposal is executed in the most beautiful way.

A proposal is not just a photographer. Behind your date there is a team: coordinators and planners, photographers, editors and decorators, drivers and musicians. No last-minute cancellations, no no-shows, no unexpected changes (unless the weather doesn't permit). We are here for you, through what is likely one of the most important events of your life.

“You can go with one photographer you found online. It's not impossible, but you're taking a risk: we often get couples who are going through a last-minute cancellation, and we do our best to accommodate them, but a proposal planned on a tight deadline rarely ends up as perfect as you want it to be. Come to us from the beginning, and we'll support you with the whole team.”

Ideas & inspiration

Chicago Proposal Ideas.

Not sure how to ask? Start with the place. Sunrise on an empty North Avenue Beach feels nothing like a rooftop cupola above the Chicago River at midnight. The spot you choose sets the tone of the entire moment, whether you want it hidden and intimate or grand and unmistakably Chicago.

Chicago proposal decorations, set up before you arrive

Every idea below works beautifully on its own, or dressed up with full proposal decorations: a styled picnic under the Lincoln Park oaks, a candle heart glowing on the lakefront, or giant MARRY ME letters waiting as you round the corner. Your proposal planner arranges the permits, the timing and the setup, and your photographer is already in position, so all you have to do is walk them there. Location guides

Chicago Proposal Locations.

The full story on every spot above: when the light is best, how private it really is, and what we can set up for you before you arrive.

Millennium Park & The Bean (Cloud Gate)

Cloud Gate sculpture that is also called "The Bean" in Millennium Park gives the most Instagram-worthy views of Chicago. Reflections of the skyline and clouds on the mirrored surface create the constantly changing compositions. The most impressive landscapes, fountains and architectural creations can be seen at Grainger Plaza and South Garden. Best light conditions occur in the morning hours when there are no crowds and golden hour reflects in the plaza.

LondonHouse Chicago Rooftop & Cupola

London House rooftop and iconic cupola give the perfect 360-degree views of the skyline of Chicago downtown, Lake Michigan and Chicago River. The combination of Beaux-Arts architecture and contemporary skyline creates the perfect contrast. While cupola provides an opportunity to capture the view with architectural details, the rooftop gives absolutely unique angles. Great place to shoot during the sunset when the lights come on.

Ambassador Hotel Rooftop

The rooftop terrace at Ambassador Hotel provides both unique and magnificent views of Lake Michigan and the Gold Coast skyline, giving your moment an intimate and memorable atmosphere. Green gardens, chic furnishings, and the reflection of the lake create luxurious backdrops. If you want an ideal location for romantic sessions with a touch of urban sophistication - this rooftop terrace is your choice!

North Avenue Beach

North Avenue Beach is one of Chicago’s most popular beaches, with breathtaking views of the turquoise waters of Lake Michigan and the city’s downtown skyline. Charming vintage Americana elements include the sandy shoreline and the ocean-liner-shaped beach house. During the summer golden hour the beach is bathed in a golden hue and the juxtaposition of nature against towering skyscrapers make for dynamic composition. Great for editorial style shots, with that quintessential Chicago lakefront feel.

Chicago Riverwalk: Wrigley Building & Bridges

The Chicago Riverwalk, near the Wrigley Building and its famous bridges, provides one of the most beautiful urban waterfront settings in the city. The illuminated Wrigley Building, historic bridges and river reflections make for great photo ops, night or day. The views from the water level are not possible on the street level, and the manicured gardens of the riverwalk add natural elements. This is a magical urban oasis with buildings catching the evening light.

Lincoln Park

Lincoln Park's Honeycomb Pavilion and Nature Boardwalk blend modern architecture with serene natural settings. The distinctive hexagonal wooden structure creates geometric patterns and natural light play, while the surrounding wetlands and native plantings provide lush green backdrops. The boardwalk winds through marshy terrain offering layers and depth in compositions. Spring and summer bring wildflowers and bird activity, creating dynamic, living backdrops.

Milton Lee Olive Park

Milton Lee Olive Park has sweeping views of Lake Michigan and rolling green spaces with a natural, less developed lakefront look. Wide open lawns, native vegetation, and water vistas create spacious compositions with minimal urban infrastructure. Sunrise sessions here are spectacular with the water so calm in reflection and the morning light so soft. The park is big enough to allow for variety, from intimate close-ups to wide landscape shots.

Garfield Park Conservatory

The Garfield Park Conservatory is a gorgeous glass palace full of exotic plants, towering palms and lush tropical landscapes. Eight interconnected greenhouses provide an infinite variety of botanical settings, from desert succulents to humid tropics to blooming flower displays. The glass architecture lets in lots of natural light, so you get nice diffused soft lighting which is perfect for portraits. Each section has a totally different feel to it giving you the most variety for one place.

Chicago Cultural Center

The majestic architecture of the Beaux-Arts style of the Chicago Cultural Center includes lofty marble chambers, elaborate stairways, and spectacular Tiffany dome that ranks among the largest in the world. The majesty, rich mosaics, and artistry of the building provide magnificent scenes worthy of being featured in magazines. The sunlight pouring into the hall via skylights produces spectacular illumination of architectural details.

Navy Pier

This century-old lakefront pier in Chicago provides views of the skyline and Lake Michigan, plus a carnival-like energy that is classic and unmistakably Chicago. Whether you’re shooting in the day or after dark, the Ferris wheel and passing boats add movement and colour to the frame. Especially dramatic at sunset, when the lights on the pier begin to glow.

Adler Planetarium / Museum Campus

Perched on its own peninsula on Lake Michigan, the Adler Planetarium's Museum Campus grounds give one of the best unobstructed views of the Chicago skyline across the water. The open lakefront lawn provides plenty of room to work with, with the entire downtown skyline as a backdrop. It's a favorite for couples who want the skyline front and center without any buildings in the foreground.

Buckingham Fountain

Buckingham Fountain is the grand centrepiece of Grant Park, one of the largest fountains in the world, with tiered pink-marble basins and the downtown skyline rising right behind it. With your photographer on the lake side, the fountain and the city line up behind the two of you. The water runs from spring to autumn and the evening light show starts at dusk, so we time the moment for that first glow and check the schedule for your date.

Promontory Point

Hyde Park's little peninsula pushes out into Lake Michigan and looks back at the skyline from the south, the same skyline everyone photographs downtown, with a fraction of the people. Limestone steps run right down to the water.

Worth the short drive for couples who want the moment entirely to themselves.

Questions

Frequently asked questions about proposals in Chicago.

It depends on the moment you want, but our favorites are Lincoln Park's gardens, a private LondonHouse cupola above the river, the Chicago Riverwalk at golden hour, Cloud Gate before the crowds arrive, and the quiet limestone steps at Promontory Point. Every spot on our map has been scouted by us for light, privacy and the angles that make the photographs worth framing.
Crowds actually help. At Cloud Gate or on the Riverwalk there are dozens of people holding cameras, and your photographer is simply one of them, working from a distance with a long lens. At quieter places like Promontory Point we set up further out and use the light instead. Either way you get a map showing exactly where they will be standing, so your only job is to walk them there and not look for them.
For a lot of the good spots, yes. Most Chicago Park District locations require a photography permit for a professional session, and the conservatories at Garfield Park and Lincoln Park also need a separate timed entry reservation. Permits usually take two to three weeks to arrange, and longer in spring and autumn when everyone books at once, which is why we ask for your date early. Your planner handles the paperwork.
Our Chicago packages start at $495 for the Proposal Photography Package and go up to $3,650 for a private rooftop with a floral arch, candles and skyline views. Pick a package above for the exact starting price.
Yes. The Picnic, Candle Heart, Marry Me, Flower Arch and Balloon packages all include styled decorations, florals and signage, set up on location before the two of you arrive. Where a permit is needed for the setup, your planner arranges that too.
We point most couples at late April through May, or late September through October. The light is soft, the lakefront is green and the crowds are thinner than in high summer. Winter proposals photograph beautifully downtown after dark, they just need a shorter outdoor window and a warm indoor spot nearby.
Winter is the season for indoor Chicago proposal spots. The Garfield Park Conservatory keeps tropical greenery and glass-house light all year (it needs a timed entry reservation), the Tiffany dome at the Chicago Cultural Center glows even on a grey afternoon, and the Rookery light court is one of the most beautiful lobbies in the city. If you still want the skyline, we plan a short outdoor moment downtown after dark, with a warm indoor backup a few minutes away.
Windy City weather can change fast, especially by the lake. We watch the forecast with you, offer flexible rescheduling, and keep covered Chicago backups in reserve, from the Cultural Center to the Rookery light court and the conservatories.
Half the planning call is about exactly this. Ann builds the cover story around something that already fits a Chicago weekend: a dinner reservation in the Loop, a walk along the Riverwalk before sunset, a friend who happens to suggest the Lily Pool. Everything else is timed around it. We never contact the person you are proposing to, for any reason.

She had no idea someone was taking photos until I pointed him out to her, and we then began an hour of cute, creative, fun photos to remember the day by. I was also sent the pictures within 2 days!

Exemplary photography, exceptional customer service, and very reasonable pricing. He put together maps of the walking path we would take to get to the proposal spot, and he was a great secret keeper as well.

It was a bit stressful to plan a proposal 3000 miles away. However, they gave me ideas, drew up routes and ensured I felt 100% comfortable. The result was a stress free, perfect execution of the happiest moment of my life.
